Technical | Shafts | Sump South pit

Section under development

  • The South shaft sump extended down from the Deep Hard inset at 760 yds to the shaft bottom at about 788yds, the remainder down to 903 yds having been filled.
  • About 20 yd. below the Deep Hard inset was another small inset which housed a triple-throw ram pump driven by an AC wound- rotor induction motor allowing controlled starting.
  • Water was pumped from the workings into the sump from where, together with seepage from deeper levels, it was pumped up to the Dunsil inset.  From there it was pumped to the surface.
  • Some distance above the pump inset hung the loop of the balance rope which was suspended underneath each cage.
  • The balance rope ran through a framework of large timber baulks located in the shaft below the Deep Hard decking level which prevented it from swinging and twisting.
