For some reason the early North winder sat well back in the engine-house, with the cylinders partly in the South and the drum only just inside the North. The overcast rope exited through a raised structure part way along the ridge of the engine-house roof.
In 1904-5 this winder was replaced and the new one was positioned in front of it with the drum close to the end wall. In order to accommodate to accommodate both underlap and overlap ropes, the end wall was again reconstructed, with the curved coping stone at the ridge now being replaced by two inclined slabs.
