The only treatment of the boiler feed-water in the 1800s was to filter it to remove any suspended material. This was done by means of a pair of “Torrent Filter” manufactured by the Pulsometer Engineering Company Ltd., Nine Elms, London, located near the feed water reservoirs. These were capable of filtering 4500 gallons per hour.

The filter consisted of a wrought or cast-iron tank containing a layer of filtering material on a grating. The filtering material was either sponge or granular matter. Dirty water entered at the top of the filter and passed through the material, emerging clean at the bottom. Beneath the grating was a series of vents through which was blown high pressure air, obtained from a steam blower supplied with the filter.  This was done for a few minutes every 10 hours or so and by supplying a reverse current of water, the filtered dirt was washed out.
