The following photographs were taken by kind permission of the Ryhope Engines Trust (www.ryhopeengines.org.uk) and show one of their range of 1908 Lancashire boilers. Two boilers are still in active use and are periodically fired up for the steaming of the two 1865 compound rotative beam engines which were used until 1967 for pumping water to the city of Sunderland.
Whilst the boilers themselves may be identical to ones used at Pleasley, the environment they were located in couldn’t be more different. No white tiles and clean floors in the boiler house at a pit.
