The flues at the rear of the boilers underwent a major reconstruction when the South engine-house was enlarged in 1921. A cross-flue through the engine-house linking the East and West chimneys was constructed. A new main flue along the back of the 9 new boilers on the SE side was linked into this at the rear of the East chimney. An additional cross-flue between these boilers and the west chimney running along the foot of the end wall of the engine house was constructed a few years later.
Following an outbreak of eye infections amongst the pupils of the nearby Rotherham Road school due to grit from the chimneys, a flue-draft boost fan was installed at the base of the East chimney. The top of the main flue-way at the rear of the chimney was tapped into and a set of double steel doors were installed at the base of the chimney which could be closed when the fan was operating during peak load times. When the fan was not being used the doors were opened to provide normal chimney draft.
